Question: What is Globalization? Explain. Answer: Globalization has hit the world almost few decades ago, and it has affected the business organization largely. The companies that are there in the global market depends often has to go global to sustain in the global competitive market. Thus, to sustain their business in the global market it is important that the organizations go for overseas expansion (Ito and Tanaka 2014). Global trade could actually help an organization to succeed in the global market because it provides the company with numerous opportunities. The overseas expansion of the company, although, means that the organization has to cross several barriers. Therefore, it is important for the organization to keep certain key issues in mind before they move towards overseas expansion of the business. Among all those key issues five most important key issues that one should keep in mind are the following: Choosing the Country: One of the most important and the fundamental issue that the organization should keep in mind in case of overseas expansion is related to choosing the country for expansion. The global market provides the organization with huge number of options. Therefore, there are chances that the organization could come in terms with the trouble. Most of the time, during business expansion, the company receives information about the country, from those parties who have the interest of either, buying, selling or else marketing the business. Thus, most of the time, the organization receives that information that is filled with errors. Thus, before the overseas expansion the organization should go through a detail market research. It would help in identifying the risks in the country and at the same time, it would help in knowing the target customer. Identifying the Customer The success of the overseas expansion depends largely upon the primary and the secondary level of market research (Channon and Jalland 2016). In such a situation, the local competitors will have their advantage but the organization should try to target the niche first and slowly as they gain experience and reputation, it will become easy for them to target the others. Thus, cultural expansion is one of the most important things that one should keep in mind during overseas expansion. Various Kinds of Business Regulations The overseas expansion of an organization means that the organization will have to go through various business regulation and tax codes. Different kinds of standards are related to labeling and packaging at the same time. The Australia and the New Zealand Bank or the ANZ is an Australian based bank that is operating not only in New Zealand but also at the same time in few regions of the Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Europe and in America as well. ANZ started their operation as the Bank of Australia (Anz.co.nz 2016). The News Corporation Ltd of Australia is a company that has been founded by Rupert Murdoch in the year, 1957. Geert Hofstede is the most important person, who believed that the culture of the workplace could affect the operations that are being carried out. Culture is not something that is being inherited; rather it is being learned from a particular group, staying within a particular boundary (Gallant 2013). In one country, there can be existence of more than one culture, as is the case with India and Africa. Thus, the culture of the organization could influence the operations of an organization in more than one way.Culture Influencing the Operation within an Organization The Index Related to Power Distance The particular index deals with the relationship that is there between the less powerful and the powerful members in an institution or in an organization (Hofstede2014). The index particularly deals with the fact that how the less powerful within the institution, expect or accept the unequal distribution of the power (Hofstede 2015). For example, the power distance index states that Australia scores very low in the power distance index since the relationship between the manager and the employees within an organization is informal. The managers rely on the team, the communication that is there between them is informal, and at the same time, it is direct. India is a country that depends on the paternalistic relationship, and thus communication that is being carried out is formal. Effect of Individualism A society that is individualistic in nature is concerned only about the self and the direct family that is associated with it. In case of the collectivist society, things are different because, here the social groups here are more important, than the individuals in the society are. The score of Australia in the individualism index is 90, whereas the score of India in the individualism index in 48 (Hofstede and Hofsted 2014). Thus, India is a collectivist society, whereas Australia is individualistic in nature. Masculinity Index The society that is masculine in nature giving more importance to the winners and the masculinity score of Australia is 61(Hofstede 2014). Thus, Australia is masculine in nature, where importance is given to success as well as to the achievements in life. India too has a high masculinity score, which is 56, and in fact, India projects herself as a masculine country. Uncertainty Avoidance Index The particular index helps in assessing how different culture, reacts to the unexpected and the unknown. Australia, in this particular index has an intermediary score that is 51. India on the other hand, has a low score of 40, which proves that Indian culture is tolerant in nature (Geert-hofstede.co 2016). The people accept whatever is there in the future. The strategy or the concept Think Global, Act Local is such a concept or a strategy that helps in fulfilling this particular aim and the objective that almost every organization have. The American company McDonalds has been wisely using the concept or strategy. The particular company is an American based company, but today McDonalds is having 33,500 restaurants or outlets (Joining the Groundswell 2014). These outlets are operating or rather they are located in 119 different countries. It is possible for McDonalds to be in the top because McDonalds offers local menu in the local market. Thus, the foo d offered by the company differs from one country to another. In fact the way McDonalds has marketed them in different countries, are also different from one another. In countries like India, where there are people of different culture and people from different background, there McDonald has introduced Maharaja Mac. In India, there are many people such as the Jains, Hindus Muslims, who refuse to eat pork, beef and there are people who do not even eat meat. Thus, Maharaja Mac, in this country is such a dish, which based either on vegetable nuggets or on the mutton. The way McDonalds promote or market their product is different from the way other organization promotes their products or services. McDonalds, therefore, standardize the brand name, although they localize various advertisement campaigns (De Mooij 2013). In case of East Asia while promoting their brand McDonalds use the children or rather promote their brand through the children. It has been seen that this type of promotio n has turned out to be effective for the success of the organization in that particular region. Another company, Starbucks, has also adopted the strategy of Think Global, Act Local, although the strategy is different from the strategy that is being taken by McDonalds. Starbucks has not brought any changes in their menu. Rather Starbucks is a company that has change the design of their coffee shop in order to adopt with the local culture of the country. Thus, different, countries have different designed coffee shops, but the taste of the coffee shops is same in all the coffee shops that are in various organizations. The managers of the organization while going through overseas expansion has to go through various kinds of staffing challenges; and there are more than one kind of staffing challenges that are being faced by the managers of the organizations. Some of the challenges that are being faced by the organizations are discussed here. Communication Problem The communication problem is one of the serious staffing problem or a challenge that is being faced by the organization. The communication problem arises mainly because of the cultural differences that are there between the organization and the workforce of a particular country (Florida 2014). The cultural differences actually lead to misunderstandings between the two groups and to avoid such problems, it is important, to have an international team as well. The Hierarchical Structure in an Organization Countries like India and China follows a hierarchical structure within an organization. In case of a hierarchical structure the workers, has some clear and definite roles and they follow the instruction of their authority or the managers. It is something that is in stark contrast with the structure that is there within a western organization. In a western organization the managers, instead of instructing the work force, allows the employees to take initiative at the same time. The difference in the labor laws and the policies poses as challenge for the overseas expansion of the organization. The overseas expansion of the organization depends on the smooth working of the workforce. The efficient working of the workforce depends on providing proper training to the people working in the organization (Pieterse 2015). Therefore, to ensure, that the workforce of the organization has to put an end to favoritism. It is one of the fundamental and the first step, towards, providing the right training to the people working in the organization.The managers of the organization should try to develop their managerial skills as well. Along with developing the managerial skills, the managers of the organization should come up with such planning within an organization, which would help the employees of the organization to gain in-house training (Karadjova-Stoev and Mujtaba 2016). When administrators are effective leaders, and give guidance and supervise with more of an authoritative approach as opposed to an authoritarian approach, it would lead to more positive results. According to Ziglar, authoritarian people simply say that you must do something because they say so. An authoritative person would explain the reason why a certain decision was made and why it is best to move in that direction. Thus, an authoritative principal treats his or her faculty members with respect, and authoritative teachers, likewise, treat their students with respect. Moreover â€Å"all of us perform better and more willingly when we know why we’re doing what we have been told or asked to do,† (p. 77). This applies equally to children as it does to adults. The book also points out the importance of being dedicated and feeling positive pride. There are a lot of administrators and teachers dedicated to the field of education. However, society in general seems to lack respect for educators; teachers are often blamed for many social problems such as the deviant behavior and poor academic ability of today’s young people, while parents and society at large are assigned little responsibility for these problems. Over the Top will actually help teachers feel more pride in being teachers. They will know that they can make a positive difference in the lives of their students. The book will motivate them to set goals both inside and outside the classrooms and take the steps necessary to accomplish those goals. They will be committed to being excellent teachers regardless of the financial compensation because they will know that eventually they will be rewarded. Being rich alone does not equal success. Zig Ziglar informs readers that being successful, and over the top includes being â€Å"happy, healthy, reasonably prosperous, and secure, to have friends, peace of mind, good family relationships, and hope,† (p. ). We are reminded to keep a positive attitude, to work towards improving our weaknesses, to view personal growth as a lifetime commitment, and to be willing to change. Haven’t you heard that to be insane is to repeatedly do the same thing and respect different results? Change leads to progress. Zig Ziglar provides the perfect instructional manual for changing our lives for the better. Over the top is interesting, inspirational and will make a difference in the lives of those fortunate enough to read it.

The will of the body politic, when formed, is determined by the will of the majority, and of a bare majority if there be no different express agreement. For this Locke does not give any reason but the necessity of the case; it is certain that much worse ones have been given. As a matter of fact, we now know that a majority vote has not been generally recognized in archaic societies; the difficulty of obtaining nominal unanimity was overcome (as in special cases it still has to be) by various methods, including varying elements of force and fiction. This does not apply to the original agreement to form a society, which is assumed to be unanimous, and includes only the actual parties to it. Any one who stands out may go his ways and provide for himself elsewhere. It would seem that the community is entitled to enforce his departure; it is certain, on Locke's principles, that it has not the right to detain him against his will. Could he agree to stay in an inferior capacity like that of a resident alien? But it is needless to pursue the auxiliary fictions which might be devised. A body politic, then, is formed by consent; the essential term of the agreement is that every member gives up his natural judicial and executive power to the community (not, as Hobbes maintains, to an irresponsible sovereign); and this consent is renewed, tacitly if not expressly, in the person of every new member; for one cannot accept the benefit of a settled government except on those terms on which it is offered. Locke is bold to assert that 'a child is born a subject of no country or government,' and may choose his allegiance for himself at the age of discretion: this is another opinion which no modern lawyer

How effectively has Charles Dickens Essay

This piece of course work is going to focus on Charles Dickens and one of his most famous works, the novel ‘A Christmas Carol. ‘ Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in the year 1812, his family was very poor; infact so poor that when Charles was merely 12 his father was imprisoned for debt. This caused Charles a lot of shame, embarrassment and humiliation which was made even worse, when, due to his family’s lack of money he was forced to work in a blacking factory, in pretty poor conditions for an even poorer pay. Infact this probably influenced his attitude to child labour in later life and inspired him to write ‘A Christmas Carol’. As Charles grew older he went on to work as an office boy and then finally he became a reporter of debates in the House of Commons for the Morning Chronicle, he also began to write sketches for a variety of journals. Dickens then went on to write a number of a famous novels: Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby and The Old Curiosity Shop were all completed, but it was in the year 1843 that Charles Dickens began to write one of his most famous novels ‘A Christmas Carol’. Dickens wrote ‘A Christmas Carol’ when London’s poor were living at their worst. Poverty, filth and disease wrecked the livelihoods of the poor living in London and there was very little that could be done about it. Many children died very young and shocking statistics show that in 1839 almost half of the funerals in London were for children under the age of ten. Families were big, the parents hoping that the more children there were the more money the family could earn but this often wasn’t the case as the cost of bringing up children was quite expensive. Parents gained money from working around the clock for six days a week this meant a lot more than 12 hour working days for the poor and often mistreat from their employers, but it gained a little money and kept the families alive. However the amount of time spent at work would obviously take a toll and family life would deteriorate so Sundays were kept very special as a time to chill once a week and just to spend time with family and friends. This was a day of freedom until the law made going to church compulsory every Sunday ‘ Sabbatarianism’. This really affected the lives of the poor as they could not spend quality time with their families and had no freedom. This was something Dickens really empathised with and he really understood the poors’ views and wanted to do all he could to change it. Most children grew up facing a life following in their parent’s footsteps which meant a life of no education or money. The only option left was to be part of the ‘ Ragged Schools’, schools run through a charity which gave children a basic education and some religious lessons. Dickens himself was very interested in this charity although he did not agree with the compulsory religious education. The lives of the poor were indeed very terrible and Dickens was determined to do something about it, he realised that people would take much more notice of the horrific living conditions for the poor if he wrote about them in a story. So through his characters in Christmas Carol he really reflected the truth about life for the poor, how even when their lives were the most terrible you could imagine, they spread love to others around them and they stuck together through the worst. How they weren’t lazy just not well enough paid. This really changed many of the rich peoples( or Scrooges) ideas about the poor and ended up changing many of the lives of the people living in London. Dickens then went on to write a number of books that are still just as famous and widely read today. He was still writing in 1870 when he died suddenly leaving his final novel ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’ incomplete. Dickens tells the story ‘A Christmas Carol’ almost like a song; each chapter is called a stave which means a verse. There are five staves; each one represents a different thing that happens to the main character Scrooge. The first stave starts off with the Scrooge before the visits from the four ghosts; ‘He was a tight fisted hand at the grind stone, Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner’. It is then a little later on in the first stave that the first ghost is introduced, Scrooge is visited by his long dead best friend the ghost of Jacob Marley. Marley tells Scrooge the coming plot of the story how he will be introduced to 3 different ghosts all with the same message ‘Change your ways’. The second stave is the visit of the first spirit, the ‘Ghost of Christmas Past’. Then the third and forth staves are separated into the visits of the second and third spirits, the ‘Ghost of Christmas Present’ and the ‘Ghost of Christmas Future’. They tell of Scrooges life and how if he doesn’t change he will come to a very bitter end. The fifth and final stave is how Scrooge has reformed his character he is a completely different person and he helps to change the lives of everyone who knows him. Dickens uses many skills and techniques to portray contrasting views on Christmas through his characters. This way he managed to open the eyes of so many people living in London, he convinced them that the poor were not lazy but good, hardworking, honest people who deserved a lot more than they got. In his novel he displayed two main, contrasting views on Christmas. One came from Scrooge, the typical rich man who did not see any reason to be jolly at Christmas as it was a time when you paid bills but had no money. ‘ What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money, a time for finding yourself a year older, and not an hour richer. ‘ The other contrasting view comes from the poorer people, whom Dickens always displays in a good light. There are two main characters in the novel that come from poorer backgrounds, one is Scrooges clerk, the hardworking, honest Bob Cratchitt, the other is Scrooges very own nephew. He is very set against Scrooges point of view on Christmas. ‘A good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time†¦ ‘ This is a very effective and clever technique that Dickens has used because he is emphasizing the fact that Scrooge is the miserly old man that doesn’t really care about anyone but himself and making money; this puts the poor in the good light, they are displayed as warm, kind hearted loving people who care and look out for each other. This is exactly what Dickens has intended to do; it has instantly made the reader aware that the poor people are the good. Another example of a contrasting view on Christmas is also in the conversation that Scrooge has with his nephew. It once again emphasises on the fact that Scrooge only cares about money; Scrooge says ‘ Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry? What reason have you to be merry? You’re poor enough. ‘ The nephew then replies: ‘Come then†¦ What right have you to be dismal? What reason have you to be morose? You’re rich enough. ‘ Scrooge is saying here that his nephew has no reason to be merry at Christmas time as he is too poor; with which the nephew retaliates that in that case Scrooge has no right to be unhappy at Christmas time as he is very rich.
